A shift in our communications strategy with open source LLMs
As a research group focused on social science and computational methods, Training Data Lab is committed to sharing our findings and insights with the wider academic community and beyond. Over the past year, we have harnessed the power of AI to generate content for Twitter, using GPT-3.5 to create engaging posts that resonated with our audience.
Our experiment using a chatbot based on GPT-3.5 to generate content was quite successful. GPT-3.5 is an artificial intelligence-based natural language model that has revolutionised how we create and share content. Using advanced algorithms, GPT-3.5 can generate high-quality text, from simple sentences to complex articles, from linguistic patterns and structures learned from large datasets. Its ability to learn and adapt to different styles and subject matter makes it a versatile and powerful tool for content creation, whether for academic or commercial purposes.
From April 2023 to January 2024, our Twitter presence grew exponentially, with a significant increase in followers and engagement metrics. Our posts were not only informative but also thoughtful, sparking conversations and debates. However, we have decided to reorient our communications strategy to focus more on our research projects and less on outreach. While our Twitter presence has been a valuable tool for sharing updates and insights, we believe it is important to concentrate on our group’s core work: conducting high-quality research and publishing in top-tier journals.
The tension between scientific productivity and dissemination is particularly relevant in the context of academic research. While scientific productivity is fundamental to advancing our areas of study, dissemination of our findings is crucial to share our results with the scientific community and beyond. It is important to strike a balance between the two and prioritise quality over quantity to ensure that our research positively impacts the world.
To achieve this goal, we have launched a new website with content generated primarily using Llama 2 and Llama 3 models deployed locally. These language models go beyond the abilities of GPT-3.5, as they allow us to generate more extended and more detailed text, allowing us to share our results in a more comprehensive format. Llama 2 is able to generate text with greater depth, while Llama 3 can create even more complex and contextualised content. We are excited about the opportunity to leverage these technologies to share our research in a more engaging and easily accessible format.
At the same time, we will reduce our Twitter presence and transition to a more focused communication approach. Instead of disseminating our content on a large scale, we will send personalised emails to subscribers, providing them with detailed information about our projects, publications and achievements.
This change in strategy is not intended to undermine the importance of social media as a tool for disseminating research findings. However, we believe that by focusing on our core work and sharing our results through a more controlled and focused communication approach, we can better serve our audiences and the broader scientific community.
